What is Heartgard Plus? Heartgard Plus contains a combination of worming medications ( Ivermectin and Pyrantel pamoate) that helps to control and treat certain intestinal parasites (roundworms and hookworms) and prevent heartworm in dogs. What are the Benefits of Heartgard Plus? Protects your dog from potentially deadly heartworm disease. Treats and controls roundworms and hookworms which can cause disease in both pets and humans. Delicious beef- flavored chewable makes administration easy. Formulated for dogs and puppies (older than 6 weeks) and considered safe for pregnant/breeding females. How is this medication given? Administered once a month, Heartgard Plus is given orally as a beef-flavored chewable. It is generally recommended to give this medication on a year-round basis but check with your veterinarian regarding his/her recommendation. A blood test to check for heartworm disease is necessary before starting Heartgard Plus and may be necessary if more than one monthly dose is skipped so check with your veterinarian regarding his/her recommendations. Only give this medication to the dog for which it has been prescribed. Do not give a double dose of medication if a dose has been missed. This medication should not be swallowed whole and should be chewed. Care should be taken that the dog consumes the complete dose. How does this medication work? The combination of worming medication in Heartgard Plus prevents heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) in dogs, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. It also controls and treats certain intestinal parasites such as hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, A. brasiliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala) and roundworms (ascarids - Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina). Ivermectin interferes with the parasite's nerve transmission, causing paralysis and death of immature heartworms (larvae). Pyrantel pamoate interrupts the parasite's nerve transmission, causing paralysis and death of intestinal worms. What results can I expect? Heartgard Plus should kill any heartworm larvae (immature heartworms) that your dog has been exposed to in the preceding month. Hookworms and roundworms can also be controlled and treated simultaneously with this medication. What form(s) does Heartgard Plus come in? Heartgard Plus for large dogs 51-100 lbs is a chewable tablet that contains beef flavoring.

This product prevents all kinds of worms in dogs. I've been using it the last 2 years/seasons and haven't had any problems/diagnoses in either of my dogs. The chewable chunks are easy to get out of the package; and they must taste great because my dogs always pluck it right out of my hand and look for more! The only thing not great I would say is that they HAVE TO BE chewed, otherwise it apparently won't work right. My dogs chew them without a problem. You can put the chewables in some peanut butter or something similar to encourage chewing if its a problem for you, though.

I would have liked more frequent communication about where my order was in process of being filled. National Pet Pharmacy contacted my vet to request the prescription - which was very helpful, thank you! But I only received two emails - when I first placed the order, and a second email the next day telling me a prescription request had been sent to my vet. Then about 12 days later the product showed up. I would have liked a shipping confirmation is all, since I was beginning to wonder if it would ever be filled! :)

EVEN THOUGH YOU PAY SHIPPING, AND MY VET HAS STATED THEY WOULD MATCH THE PRICE, NOT HAVING TO PICK UP FROM THE VET IS CONVENIENT AND SAVES TIME AND GAS. WHAT YOU PAY IN SHIPPING IS LESS THEN THE GAS YOU WOULD USE TO PICK IT UP.
